Local software firms seek to revolutionize education

"Windsor High School teacher Catlin Tucker had a problem.
How could she engage the students who rarely spoke up in class?" writes STEVE HART in The Press Democrat.

“It's pivotal to get all the kids to share,” she said. “But the same ones always dominated. It was really frustrating.”

Then she heard about Collaborize, software from a Santa Rosa startup that makes it simple for small groups to hold online discussions.
Tucker used the free software to create a classroom website and posted some homework questions.

That's when she noticed a change.
“Within the first 20 minutes there were three responses,” she said. “They were students I never heard from in class.”

She started using Collaborize to hold after-school discussions, distribute class materials and share student projects. The online component encouraged shy students to speak up in class, she said.
“There was a much higher rate of participation,” said Tucker, who teaches English and language arts to ninth and tenth graders. “It gives everybody a voice.”

The Collaborize platform was launched just 18 months ago, but it's now being deployed by 11,000 teachers worldwide, said Richard Lang, CEO of Democrasoft, the Santa Rosa company that makes Collaborize.
